Community Foundation Grant Supports Conservation and Green Space Efforts in Vermillion County

The Vermillion County Community Foundation recently awarded a $1,200 grant to the Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation District to support a project that will benefit both the environment and Vermillion County residents.

The project combines two activities that the district already hosts in the county. One of these is a “Weed Wrangle,” where volunteers work with conservation staff to remove harmful plant species while learning how to care for natural areas. These events often leave behind piles of brush and small trees that must be removed.

Through this project, that brush will be turned into mulch instead of being discarded. The mulch will be used in local green spaces where native plants are grown to support pollinators and improve soil health.

“By repurposing the brush as mulch rather than sending it to a landfill, the project helps keep valuable nutrients in the soil while making use of natural materials within the community,” explained Steven McGhee, Vermillion County Soil and Water Conservation Resource Technician. “Any extra mulch will be made available to county residents at no cost.”

The project will also help remove fallen limbs from local trails and residents’ properties when possible.
